Here at Hutchies we love supporting local communities and we were stoked to sponsor the Indigenous round of the 2017 Toowoomba Rugby League (TRL). The round marked the season opening and featured a fierce contest between the TRL All Stars and South West Queensland Emus Indigenous All Stars, ultimately seeing the All Stars prevail 28-20. Held at Clive Berghofer Stadium on Saturday 25, the round also included matches for under 14s, under 16s, under 18s, and women’s teams.

Hutchies’ Statim Yaga (‘start work’) team went along to the ground to talk to locals about Indigenous careers in construction.

“It was terrific to talk to locals in the region about our goal to train and place 350 Indigenous jobseekers into employment by 2019,” said Hutchies' Indigenous program coordinator, Mark Kucks. “We’ve had great success so far, but we need to keep spreading the word about the opportunities available to start a career in construction,” he said.

It’s part of the Federal Government’s Employment Parity Initiative, but really, to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workers in the communities we’re operating in is just a no-brainer for us.

A bunch of politicians were present too, including The Hon Mark Furner MP, Queensland Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships; Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio; Liberal National Member for the electorate of Groom Dr John McVeigh, and State and Local Members David Janetski and Trevor Watts. They all took the time to catch up with our team to learn more about the work we’re doing to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people into construction careers.
