Weeks to build

This project formed part of an ongoing component of the Cairns Cityport Development, providing facilities to enhance the port and foreshore for the benefit of the city and the tourism industry. The Wharf 1 structure, Shed 2 and its immediate environs are all heritage listed, thus making all work in this area subject to approval by DERM and other heritage management authorities.

During the course of the project, Hutchies worked with the architect to improve aspects of the design and use of recyclable components. Many of the underground services were upgraded or replaced to ensure the requirements for future growth were available without having to dig up completed and established areas. The wharf remained fully operational throughout the duration of the project, so careful coordination was required between war & cruise ships and the local fishing fleet, whilst maintaining port security.

The local media and interest groups all commented very favourably on the project and what it offers to the community. It has the potential to be adapted and expanded into many uses which were not previously available to the Cairns area.
