MonaJettyTunnel

The tunnel provides an accessible alternative to Mona's 99 step entry at the ferry platform on the banks of the Derwent River. It spans 54m in length, goes three levels deep, and connects with pinpoint accuracy to The Void in the heart of the museum. 

Designed by Nonda Katsalidis Architects, the tunnel shows off stunning raw exposed sandstone capped with beautifully crafted steel entry portals on each end. Mona's Jetty Tunnel instantly provides an immersive arrival experience for visitors as they step off the ferry.

Hutchies proudly delivered this project without any disruption to the operations of the museum, while protecting the beauty of its natural environment and adopting a range of safety initiatives for workers undertaking high risk activities. These methodologies included using the river for barge access to mitigate access restrictions and disruption, full-body PPE and extraction systems to minimising exposure to silica dust during boring, and a height adjustable cage for the installation of rock anchors as the tunnel progressed using modified digging equipment which tunnelled 6m at a time and allowed plant operators the ability to work safely outside of the unsupported zone.
